- form of public punishment where letters, having certain meanings, were sown into your clothes or, in more extreme cases, branded onto your skin
- Different letters meant different meanings - T for thief, D for drunkard, R for rogue and F for forger.
- the letters were branded onto you, they were usually on your hands, so they could be visually shown
